Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.
Pages Through the Ages returns with a look and comparison on the classic Basic editions of D&D. To be clear, this is a focus on the Holmes, Moldvay and Mentzer Basic sets, not the modern 5e "Basic D&D". In prior "Making a Character" episodes, I have created characters in each edition (or at least as the ones I have got to so far). I had considered doing the same for each variation of Basic D&D but decided it would get too repetitive and opted instead to do a comparison to the different iterations of the line as there are very strong preferences and memories the community has for each version. It is also interesting to look back to see how they compare and evolved from the OG wood grain/white box from 1974 (for which I DID previously focus on making a character with for a prior episode). Tune in to hear my comparison of each historic version of Basic, and what made them stand apart and develop a lasting following each their own.
